Gatesville

The City of Gatesville claims to be the “Spur Capital of Texas.”  It is the county seat for Coryell County and is home to the largest collection of antique spurs in the world.

The city is part of the Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood metropolitan statistical area. It is a vibrant small-town community northwest of Killeen located about 30 miles from Waco and is midway between Austin and Fort Worth.

Gatesville Independent School District serves over 2,700 students in either the high school, junior high school, intermediate school, elementary school or primary school.  Each campus focuses on “Doing What’s Best for Kids!” as its district wide motto.

The local economy is based primarily on retail, agriculture, corrections, and manufacturing. The State of Texas is the largest employer in the city, with approximately 2,500 employees working at one of the several prison facilities. It has five of the nine prisons and state jails for women operated by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
