Harker Heights is part of the Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood metropolitan statistical area.  It is in Bell County, just 4 miles southeast of Killeen and 56 miles north of Austin.  It offers numerous recreational opportunities for residents and visitors with its parks, sporting venues, and proximity to Stillhouse Hollow Lake

As an actively growing community located in the fifth fastest growing metropolitan statistical area in Texas, Harker Heights has experienced historic residential and commercial growth in recent years. Some of the major employers in the area include: U.S. Army Fort Hood, home of the III Armored Corps, military defense contractors, Seton Medical Center Harker Heights, Baylor Scott & White Health, Freedom Urgent Care, and H-E-B.

Students in Harker Heights are enrolled in the Killeen Independent School District. The District serves the Central Texas communities of Killeen, Fort Hood, Harker Heights, and Nolanville.  There are 31 elementary schools, 11 middle schools, 5 high schools, 3 special campuses, a state-of-the-art Career Center, and an Early College High School serving approximately 45,000 students.  KISD is the 4th most diverse district in Texas and the 24th largest district in Texas.
