Known as the “Sausage Capital of Texas”, Elgin is famous for its Elgin Hot Sausage made for over 125 years at the Southside Market and BBQ, Inc. Meyer’s Elgin Smokehouse BBQ restaurant opened in 1998 and continued the 75 years and four generations of family tradition of making outstanding sausage. It is said, you are welcome to “Cuetopia” Texas, which is the perfect “state” of BBQ.

Elgin also has the title of “Brick Capital of the Southwest” for its long history of brick production. The Acme Brick Company is one of the largest employers in Elgin. The plant is located near rich deposits of natural earth clays and is near the Austin metroplex. Elgin-Butler Brick Company has been in the area since 1873 and was built on four generations of Butler family members.

Elgin is located approximately 19 miles east of downtown Austin and is in both Bastrop and Travis Counties. It is considered one of the fastest growing regions in Texas.

Elgin Independent School District serves more than 4,900 students in its seven campuses. It has two high schools, a middle school, an intermediate school, and three elementary schools.
